An existing building at the Schwieberdingen site has been comprehensively remodeled. The property, known by its abbreviation Si 121, had stood empty after the Starters and Generators division moved out. The Electrified Motion (EM) division has now moved in; previously, this division was housed in two rented properties in Tamm, approximately ten kilometers from Schwieberdingen.
All of EM’s offices and laboratories are now located at one site. Before the division moved in, the building had to be adapted to EM’s needs – which included accommodating the test benches. The test benches are function test benches for electric motors with a test bed and a brake. They are located on two levels: in the basement and on the second floor. They are connected to utilities on the ground floor; this level houses heating and cooling units that cover a temperature range between -40°C and +110°C. The primary control cabinets for power distribution are also located on this floor.
A large percentage of the facility’s existing basic cold water plumbing was left in place. However, the performance of the transformer system needed to be improved. Crane systems were installed in the test benches and the workshop area. Additionally, all the floors received new coatings, the doors in the test bench area were replaced, and the drinking water pipes were refurbished. The ventilation, safety, and fire prevention systems were also updated.
The core areas with the test cells are now surrounded by office spaces and mechanical workstations. Glass focus rooms and phone cabins have been newly installed in freely chosen locations throughout the space. There is also a new lounge where associates can sit at the bar and enjoy a coffee.
