In Eisenach, the Powertrain Solutions (PS) division is manufacturing a product that is, thus far, the only one of its kind on the market: a 48-volt battery. This shoebox-sized battery is installed in vehicles to supply the onboard power system, relieving some of the load normally borne by the internal- combustion engine. Demand for the
battery has skyrocketed in recent years, and the division outgrew its production facility on the western end of Bosch’s Eisenach campus. The nearly 14,000-square-meter facility did not give Logistics much room to maneuver. The division also needed room for a second production line. The facility had to be expanded.
Initially, a smaller building (1,700 square meters) was constructed while the facility continued to operate. The building now opens up to a recessed courtyard via eight new docks where trucks can be efficiently loaded and unloaded. While this extension – dubbed 108 a – was still being constructed, PS decided to expand the logistics facility again, constructing a no-frills warehouse next door. Measuring in at twelve meters high with 3,700 square meters of floor space, the warehouse is covered with
corrugated aluminum siding. The building primarily contains high-rise racks storing materials and products.
There is also a new area with office spaces, sanitary facilities, and a front desk where drivers can sign in. If demand for the 48-volt battery continues to increase, the warehouse can be easily converted into an additional manufacturing facility. The building materials and structure were planned accordingly right from the start.
Both extensions are supplied with air, hot water, and heating energy via the existing buildings. The undeveloped area next to the site has been home to a photovoltaic
system for some time now; the Eisenach site has been climate-neutral for years.
