Robert Bosch Automotive Steering GmbH has expanded its logistics facility at its site in Schwäbisch Gmünd. The plant had undergone restructuring, and as a result, it needed more space. The new 4,530-square-meter building dispatches all the ER steering systems for Plant 7 and consolidates the cross-docking facilities. Right from the beginning, the building was planned so that it could also be used for assembly and manufacturing in the future, if necessary.

The master plan stipulated that the increased demand for space would be covered by an extension of the existing structure and architecture of the facility. The existing buildings were originally constructed as assembly and manufacturing facilities. The new building is now located to the west of the Sgm 703 manufacturing facility. In the north, it connects to the loading bay of the Sgm 701 building. The side facing the factory road incorporates a covered loading area for trucks. The exterior of the facility now has a matte skin with a silver shimmer to it. The facade was constructed using horizontally aligned coffered steel sheets with mineral fiber insulation anchored to the steel supports. Vertically mounted corrugated aluminum was attached to these steel sheets as a rear-ventilated exterior shell. The aluminum sheets are divided by vertically mounted pilaster strips.

The western facade – the only space that cannot be extended – now has a ribbon window, which, along with the skylight strips in the roof, ensures that the interior of the building gets sufficient daylight. From its nave onward, the structure of the logistics facility’s roof is shared with the structure of the technical center and the two shop facilities on either side. The nave is constructed of reinforced concrete pillars with steel framework main girders attached on top; the roof structure lies between these girders. Secondary girders are positioned every eight meters between the framework main girder in the nave, the framework secondary girder in axis 70, and the supports in axis 86. Their 28-meter length is exceptional for a facility of this size.
